8 Black Women's History Documentaries That Everyone Should Watch
All but two can be streamed for FREE and the last one is under 30 minutes long!
I originally created this list for Women’s History Month 2025 (and shared it on another app). But I think people here will also appreciate it. So, here’s the list, in no particular order…
1) Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming A Space
You can watch it on YouTube.
Watch me discuss it here.
2) Fannie Lou Hamer’s America
You can watch it on YouTube or on Kanopy.
Watch me discuss it here.
3) Fundi: The Story of Ella Baker
To the best of my knowledge, the only way to watch this documentary is to stream it on Vimeo. You’ll have to pay to rent it, and it’s a bit dated. But, in my opinion, it’s worth it.
Watch me discuss it here.
4) Storming Caesars Palace
You can access it through the official website here, or on Kanopy.
Watch me discuss it here.
5) Anita: Speaking Truth to Power
This documentary is available on multiple streaming platforms including Kanopy.
Watch me discuss the documentary here.
6) Pushout: the Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools
Pushout is available on Kanopy and on YouTube.
7) My Name is Pauli Murray
I think this documentary is only available on Amazon, which sucks for those of us who prefer to avoid that platform. But, it is an excellent film, and Pauli Murray is someone more people should know about.
8) Searching for Augusta Savage
This may be the last, and shortest one on the list, but this documentary is not to be avoided. It’s available on YouTube.
